About us

First Christian Church of Greater New Orleans (FCCGNO) was begun in 1981 with the merger of two other congregations, Jefferson Christian and Gentilly Christian. The campus you see today at 8121 Airline Drive was the original Jefferson Christian Church, built in 1957 and consisting of sanctuary, education wing and offices.

In the mid 1980's, a gymnasium/fellowship hall and more classroom space was added. The original sanctuary was repurposed as a gathering area and more office space. The final piece to our present configuration, a new sanctuary stretching south along Airline Drive, was built and dedicated in 1998.

At present, our facility is home to three different congregations, as well as hosting numerous other community outreach activities. For the women of the church, we offer two different groups, Dorcas and Rachel Circles, as a way of getting more involved in the everyday life of the congregation.

FCCGNO plays an important role in the continuing recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 by hosting numerous mission groups from all around the country, as well as collecting and contributing regularly to The Dorothy Watson Center, our neigboring community center. The Desmond Project, The Ulster Project, Hagar's House, Eden House are some of the outreach programs of our congregation.

As mentioned earlier, communion is a vital part of the worship life of the FCCGNO congregation. We celebrate communion each and every week as a regular part of our worship. Music is also an extremely important part our our worship. Presented as an offering to God, an act of worship and a service, we're always looking for singers willing to offer their gift of music!

We hope you will come worship and experience the joy of the Risen Lord with us!
